Recap: Bird Trouble x 4Kinship Pop Up | January 2025 | American Southwest Tour
I had such a great time popping up with Bird Trouble at 4Kinship in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The founder, Amy, and her team is moving fast in action to give back to this land’s Native American Indigenous Navajo people by running 4Kinship, a vehicle to give Navajo a voice, sell Native made art (providing income!), and building much needed outdoor recreational spaces like skate parks in their communities under the Diné Skate Garden Project. Being in her current temporary retail space with Povi was very inspiring! They were creating upcycled garments together. Amy does this amazing hand dyed work in collaboration with other artists and her creations are absolutely one-of-a-kind, a celebration, and beautiful.
Amy took home a Bird Trouble Radley Convertible Bag in gold bison, redwood bison, and black bison leather ~ if you know Amy, you know this is the most perfect leather color combination for them. I met a few new clients who went home with new Bird Trouble, a few kindred free spirits who hugged me after they learned I was traveling solo with my art, and a pair that called me “their new friend!”.
I left with these amazing 100% cotton upcycled military pants. Amy recolored these by hand dying them under the blue skies of NM. On the front and the back is Yakama Nʉmʉnʉ artist Carmen Selam screen printed artwork… I absolutely will cherish these for the rest of my life because I know they will stand the test of time. I also took home a 100% cotton Heres To You SS t-shirt. It says Support Indigenous Art and I love Amy’s hand dyed work on it.
Amy and I had dinner together with Charlie the pup at our feet and I drove us through town in the Mini Bus. It was really fun bringing others in the bus, my little nomadic space! As a woman of color myself, 4Kinship was really the most welcoming, safe, and creative uplifting space I could spend my time in in Santa Fe. 4Kinship is one of the few Native owned stores in the town which says a lot and explains why supporting them is important. Keep your eyes on 4Kinship as they navigate from a retail space to an online space and a non-for-profit where you too can support their mission.
